How can you compete against the odds?

We climbed Yr Wyddfa / Snowdon in great weather. So it wasn’t a surprise to see a hundred people already waiting for the bus as we parked in Nant Peris. Some enterprising taxi drivers had also arrived, sensing an opportunity.

“Anyone want to share a taxi?” we called, and a few minutes later we were riding up to the pass, meeting our fellow passengers and discussing their plans for the day.

We split the taxi fare at Pen-y-pass, which worked out about the same as the bus. And started off up the mountain a lot earlier than the crowd left in the car park.

This event reminded me how even when a large vendor (the bus) dominates the market, there are still opportunities for new entrants (the taxis) to find customers who want a better service. If you’re launching into a crowded market, then you need to know what will give your product or service the competitive advantage. As Peter Drucker said, “Innovation is change that creates a new dimension of performance”.
